Tests
New performance tests: 8-inch PoE wall tablet with an 8-core CPU
A smoothness demo of the 8-inch PoE wall tablet with an 8-core processor, camera views and a demanding Windy iframe.
After the latest system improvements in the HA Tablet project, it was time to test the new 8-inch PoE model with an 8-core processor.
What the recording shows
I prepared a short demo showing:
- instant switching between tabs and dashboards,
- smooth operation,
- a stable preview from 4 cameras,
- a full-screen Windy iframe test, even though it is one of the more demanding resources you can embed in WebView.
Why is Windy such a demanding view?
This is not a regular page with animated graphics. Windy uses, among other things:
- complex WebGL rendering with multi-layer shaders,
- dynamic maps that pull large amounts of data, including wind, pressure, radar and weather models,
- animated HD textures rendered in real time.
On weaker devices, and sometimes even on desktops, this kind of view can cause CPU/GPU usage spikes and reduce smoothness. In WebView, system-imposed limits and throttling add another layer of constraints.
Next steps at that stage
The next steps were:
- implementing OTA updates,
- trying to estimate the cost of launching official device sales.
